NHS Care Identity smartcard integration is coming to NHSmail in November

Posted On: 02/11/2022

NHSmail have worked in collaboration with the Identity and Access Management Platform team to implement changes that allow users to link their NHSmail and their NHS CIS accounts, allowing staff to sign into NHSmail services using a single set of credentials; reducing the time to access the platform and improving their user experience.

The ability to link ID's is available now. The ability to authenticate via NHSmail’s web based authentication page is expected to be live on Thursday 17 November.

The NHSmail and NHS Care Identity Service Sign In will allow NHSmail users who have a NHS Care Identity (Smartcard) account to sign in and access services supported by NHSmail via supported web browsers. This addition to the NHSmail sign in page will offer users with NHS Care Identity an integrated sign on seamless experience reducing the time taken to sign in.

When on the NHSmail sign in page, users who do not have an NHS Care Identity (Smartcard) account will still have the option to sign in to their NHSmail account using their existing @nhs.net email address and password combination. Users who do have a NHS Care Identity (Smartcard) account will now be able to sign with it using the new NHS Care Identity option provided.

This change will be talked about in the November roadshow and we will be seeking support from Registration Authorities and IT leads to help get this adopted more widely across the NHS. There is further work planned in this space to help move further forward to a Single Sign On capability.
